"The highest form of flattery and
acknowledgement of one's profession is
the dedication of something in his name
after he has departed.

Mr. Paul Fleming dedicated many
years of his professional life to
Wilmington High School. He said many
times 'there is no higher calling than
teaching young people/ He truly be-
lieved this and devoted himself to the
students and the school.

He will probably be most remembered
for his lighter intercom announcements,
including his recipe for cherry pie and
his famous apple picking farms.

On a more serious note, he truly be-
lieved that each student had potential
and always acknowledged individual
and team accomplishments in the class-
room and on the playing fields."

Mr. Woods

"Mr. Fleming will always be remembered here at
Wilmington High School. His presence has left a lasting
impression on all who have come in contact with him.
WHS will not be quite the same without those numerous
random announcements of encouragement and sup-
port for The Little School on Church Street/ Mr. Fleming
will definitely be missed, but we wish him the best in all
his future endeavors."

Sophia Martinos

"Mr. Fleming will be remembered at WHS
for his boundless faith in his students and
staff and his enthusiasm for education."

Mrs. Shea

"In the three years I knew him for, he was
one of the only people who supported me
in everything I did."

Nick Pavlidis

"One of the finest American principals."

Steve Kosmidis

"The Little School on Church Street hasn't
been the same since he left. I don't think the
town can find another principal with as
much enthusiasm and school spirit as Paul
T. had."

Melissa Kanter

"Mr. Fleming was a wonderful principal
who always made time for all his students."

Dawn Redmond

"He has always been very sincere with his
feelings towards the students"

Mrs. King

"He is very supportive and caring."

Alison Colclough

"A kind and caring individual/' was the
response from all of the students and faculty at
Wilmington High when asked about Carl
Olsson. As one of Wilmington High School's
most beloved teachers, Carl Olsson has had
such an effect on both teachers and students
that the school population clearly envisions the
life of Olsson rather than dwell on the death of
this superb educator.

Carl Olsson is remembered as a man who
was totally dedicated to the education of both

Wilmington students as well as Chelmsford students. In Wilmington, he was
the Social Studies Department Head and was a teacher for twenty-seven
years. In Chelmsford, where he resided, he was a family man with two chil-
dren. He was dedicated to Chelmsford education and served several years on
the Chelmsford School Committee. In Chelmsford, the sense of loss is still
present. Olsson was venerated in Chelmsford and enjoyed his students.

"He [Olsson] had a great sense of ethics," Lawrence Maggio, a
Wilmington High School U.S. History and Psychology teacher and friend of
Olsson's, said. "He was a gentleman with everyone. He was very unassum-
ing with his accomplishments and was humble," Maggio eulogized.

Abigail Russell, who worked with Olsson for 13 years, remembers him as
a "caring and concerned person who carried that over to the classroom." She
also went on to add that he took time to listen carefully to his students. He
also shared his ideas for making classes more interesting with the rest of the
Social Studies Department.

Wilmington high students remember Olsson as a respectful and respected
individual who had many ideas for making what could be boring classes,
into places where creativity and excitement were always present.

Remember all the good times. Forget all the bad times. Remember getting in all
the trouble with my friends. Skipping school. Most of all watching myself grow up
since freshman year. Even though I've goofed off a lot in the past I really tried hard
this last year to better myself. Friends to always remember: Erin Landry, Beth
Murch, Megan Thomas, Katie Maison, Christin, Melissa, Fossi, Bill Breslin,
Mike, Shawn, James. My friends that have all ready graduated. All the partys And
trouble we used to get into out of school. Most of all never forget the times that
mean the very most to me and will never forget my bestfrtend Scott Graham who
has always been there for me, and most important David Rowbotham my husband
to be for being so patient with me, and our little son David J. R., My mother and
father who help me out and also putting up with me.

ear Seniors:
I have known most of you both as teacher and
administrator. The past four years have brought
change, as well as academic and social growth
for all of you. Use this occasion of your gradu-
ation to look to the future with excitement and
strive to achieve your dreams and aspirations.
You alone possess the key to success. Hold
close the joy of learning, for it is this one skill
that will carry you through life's journey. Look
at your graduation not as an end, but as a new
beginning.

Best wishes and good luck,
Michael Nee

TOUCHDOWN!

The Wildcat Football team faced many changes going into the Cape Ann League in the 1995 season. The team and coaching
staff came with a new attitude. Gerry Sullivan is the head coach followed by Bob Scaccia, Chuck Carucci, and Rob Patterson.

Football

The team was led by Captains Tom Burke and
Pat Finn. Other seniors on the team were Josh
Cormier, Brian Carroll, Dave DiPasquale,
Steve Ritucci, and Mike Caira. The team played
well in the new league with some upsetting
losses and some big wins. With one game left
going into Thanksgiving the 3-6 Wildcats were
looking to play hard and win the last
Wilmington - Tewksbury game ever to be
played. The team would like to thank the fans
for their support. Also thanks to the great
coaching staff.

Golf

The Golf team had a great year. Coached by Mr.
Fessenden, these Wildcats went to the state
championship for the first time in twelve years.
Moving into the Cape Ann league was tough
because no one knew what to expect from the
opposing towns. Still, a strong and solid team of
dedicated golfers worked their way to an 8 win
and 5 loss record. The top five golfers on the
team and their records were Captain and Senior
Bill Dineen (10-3-0), Juniors Rob Torrani (8-3-2),
Ryan Haubner (8-5-0), Mike Wolley (1-4-2), and
Freshman Dave Senarian (6-6-1). Other impor-
tant players were Kurt Anderson, Kevin
Considine, Pete Grasso, Sean Haubner, and
Shaun Neville.

Punt! Kick! Score!

Our record was 5-11-2. It was a tough
experience moving into the Cape Ann
League from the Merrimack Valley
Conference, not being familar with the
teams there. With the loss of Joe
Bamberg, one of the best goalies in the
league, we were left without an expe-
rienced goalie. Darren Bishop stepped
in and did a great job. Senior captains
Doug Olender, Steve Kosmidis, and

and Eric Jones did a great job keeping
the team together. Seniors Dave
Bennet, Kevin Kacamburas and Danny
King all had solid seasons. The team's
future looks bright with players Chris
Kilburn, Scottie Swiezynski, Jeff
Arciero, Tom Heigham, and Tom
Casella. Darren Bishop, Steve
Kosmidis, and Doug Olender were se-
lected to the CAL all-stars.

Pass! Kick! Score!

We had a tough first season in the Cape Ann League. We were a young
team but had a lot of leadership from the seniors. The seniors were
Captains Karen DeFrancesco and Nicole Dussault, Renee Vachon, Elaine
Bruno, Cindy Oatis, Joan DeMarco, and Charise Thresher. Even though we
had a hard season there was a lot of dedication from the entire team. The
season was a rebuilding year for the team but the younger kids showed
great determination.

Cross Country

Run! Sprint! Win!

The Wilmington High School Cross Country team had a good year
despite having a young team. They went 2-7 overall in their first year
as a CAL league team. We had three seniors: Captains Stephen
Marchillo, Tim Peterson, and Nate Censullo. We lost four of our seven
starters last year which made our season very tough. Look for the
cross-country team in the near future because they will retain 5
freshman, 2 sophomores, and 3 juniors. Nate Rules!

Wrestling

The 1996 Wilmington High School Wrestling team was
led by Captains Bill Tate and Mike O'Toole. The returning
varsity juniors, Mike Shelly, Rob Torrani, and Tom Casella
had a great season. Sophomores Jamie Campbell, Dan
Bonnell and Shawn Sullivan were a great help to the team.
First timers Shawn Decoste, Dave DiPasquale and Faron
Young improved steadily throughout the season. The class
of 1999 made the biggest mark with ten wrestlers.

Field
Hockey

This year was an exciting year for
us. We had a new coach and very
young team. The young team
consisted of Captain Leanne
Harris, Jen Mullins, Julie Gillis,
Christina Peters, Deana Ward,
Paula DeCourcey, Suzanne
Williams, Nicole Catanzano,
Leanne Bento, Christine Crowley,
Jodi MacKenzie, Catherine
Townsend, Katie Gillis, Tricia
Kane, Karen MacGarther, and
Julie Yentile. The coaching staff
was made up of Maureen Noone
and Mary Ann Gillis and volun-
teer Mrs. Townsend. The field
hockey team made it to the tour-
nament but lost in the first round
to Tyngsboro 1-0. The team
would like to thank everyone for
the support that they received
throughout the year.

Hockey

In the past, the Wilmington High School hockey team
has struggled. However, over the past several years the
program has grown progressively better. Last year was the
first time in several years that the team had taken part in the
state tournament.

This year, with the entrance into the Cape Ann League,
the team has been able to excel. As of January 24 the team's
record was 8 and 2. Qualification for the tournament occurs
after 10 wins, and it appears as though the team will more
than just qualify this year. This team looks to be competitive
in the tournament, and a successful season looks promising.

107

Boys' Basketball

The basketball team had one of its
best seasons ever. With five games left,
the Cats have already qualified for the
tournament, with a 10-5 record. The
team is led with strong performances
from senoirs Olender, leading the
league in scoring, Carroll, Eldridge,
Kosmidis, Caira, and King. The team
got off to a 6-0 start with two big wins
coming in the Christmas Tourney. Bates

played well and was named to the All
Tournament Team. The teams great
play was due in a large part to the
guard combinations of Clancy, Gargan
and Kilburn, Arciero who were able to
pick the team up with their outside
shooting. Another standout for the
team was sophomore Sweizinski (23
points against Georgetown) who
started all season long. Although the

Cats lost two in a row, a tough game to
Lawrence and the triple overtime loss
to Masco to fall to 8-5, they rebounded
with strong play from towards Thresher
and Gillis to beat North Reading and
Rockport and qualify for the postseason.
The Cats hope to finish strong and play
well in the Division III Tourney.

Basketball Cheerleaders

Now that we have entered the Cape Ann League, the basket-
ball cheerleaders are required to go into competition. We
have eight new cheerleaders, along with six from last year;
who have all worked hard to prepare for competition.
Hopefully we will do well throughout the season and at
competition, but all that matters is that we have fun.

The 1995-96 WHS Wildcat Track Team is looking strong with Senior Co-
Captains Kevin Kacamburas and Greg Young leading the way. Kevin is a
state-wide competitor in the 300yd and Young is nationally ranked in the
600yd. The mile relay is another strong event for Wilmington this year with
Senior Tim Peterson and Junior Mike Sweet joining Kacamburas and Young.
Junior Jeremy Rufo is doing a great job battling out the mile with rival schools
in the Cape Ann and Merrimack Valley Leagues, along with other team
members John Williams, Keith McLaren, and Chris Raetano (all shotput), and
Rory Ballou (300yd). Senior Steve Marchillo is the top Wildcat in the two mile;
and keep your eye on Chris Ferraro and Dan Sweet on the hurdles. The young
Wildcat team, coached by Mr. Cripps, had their first victory in CAL against N.
Andover and is headed for many more.

National Honor Society

Mentor Program

-Mi: t!T; ^'.i|.-.-

For one full semester two days a week nine students were
chosen to "shadow" a Winchester Hospital staff member in
order to experience the realities of a medical career. Each
student was assigned to a faculty advisor who met with his
student once a week to review what was done during the
previous week. According to those involved, "It was a
positive and rewarding experience."

Jennifer Mullins

Founded in 1921, the National Honor
Society was created to recognize
excellence in academic scholarship, lead-
ership, service, and character. To be eligible for
membership in the WHS Chapter, candidates
must first qualify academically by achieving a
cumulative average of at least 88 since Freshman
year (Physical Education grades are not
included). This average is weighted by assign-
ing one quarter of a point to each Level Four
academic class.

Students who meet the scholastic require-
ment are then eligible for consideration on the
basis of service, leadership, and character.
Specific guidelines for these three qualities are
determined by the NHS By-Laws which require
members to "hold school offices or positions of
responsibility, to promote and to participate in
extra-curricular activities and competitions, to
volunteer in the community, to demonstrate the
highest standards of honesty, reliability, cour-
tesy, and punctuality, to comply with all school
regulations, and to consistently uphold prin-
ciples of morality and ethics". In order to verify
leadership and service, eligible students must
complete an Activity Information Form which
requires the signatures of advisors and coaches
and also submit a letter describing their commu-
nity volunteer work. The number of hours spent
in each activity /service is considered as well as
the student's leadership role and commitment.
Character is measured in terms of behavior,
integrity, cooperation, and teacher recommen-
dations.

Membership, however, is much more than an
honor. It carries with it a responsibilty and an
obligation not only to strive for excellence, but
also to demonstrate that you were really worthy
of selection.

Chorus

Strings

On Wednesday, October 18th,
British students will be arriving in
Wilmington for an American ad-
venture. Seventy-six Strings Attached and
choral volunteers will be taking them into
their homes to enjoy ten fun-filled days in
America. On Wednesday and Thursday
they will be following their American part-
ners around to their classes to learn about
our culture.

On Friday, October 20th, all talented
string performers will perform at the State
House in Boston for a Hall of Flags concert.
There will be a banquet held by Representa-
tive Miceli, photos with the officials, a State
House tour, and citations. Following that
will be an Old Ironsides tour with the Brit-
ish Consulate and a North End tour. To

finish this full day event, everyone will eat dinner at the European restaurant
with Republicans in Quincy market. Over the weekend they will participate
in family events with their American partners. Monday through Wednesday,
British students will tour West and North Intermediate Schools and Sha wsheen,
Wildwood,Boutwell, and Woburn Street Elementary Schools.

The Final Farewell concert will be held on Thursday, October 26th at 7pm
in the High School gym. The Wild wood chorus, the High School choir, band,
and the flag squad will join Strings Attached in an extraordinary performace
followed by Holmfirth Symphony and a world premier performance of an
orchestral work by Michael Donovan.

There will be a reception following. Major funding for this event is
provided by Yoplait/Colombo yogurt. Seven hundred to one thousand
tickets were sold in two days. To purchase tickets see Mr. Dilmore. Tickets are
$4.00 each. Good luck Strings Attached!

Business as Usual

In a quiet but
interactive manner,
students in the Of-
fice of the 90' s class
act as managers of
their own com-
pany. The center of
the operation is
Mean Jeans Manu-
facturing Com-
pany. Every detail
of each business
such as maintain-
ing cash records,
sales records, and
doing business
with the other
managers of the
Pettisville commu-
nity is controlled
by the students.
Within thePettis-
ville community,
there are busi-
nesses such as the
Pettisville Post Of-
fice, the Pettisville
Bank, and the Daily
News that are all
needed to survive
in the business
world.

During the
month of Novem-

Jt's fun,
and we
learn skills
that will help
in our personal
lives and our
future careers.

ber, several activities
occurred within the
community. First,
there was a grand
opening that took
place on November
15. The managers ad-
vertised and deco-
rated their businesses
for this special occa-
sion, and a plant was
sent by the Board of
Directors to wish us
good luck. During this
event each manager
was formally intro-
duced, and a presen-
tation was given by
each to explain the
basic services of his or
her company. Ideas
and plans were also

discussed as to
how to make each
business a success.

Another event
that started in
November was the
"Manager of the
Month." A man-
ager was chosen
each month, and a
picture was posted
to acknowledge
his/her hard work
and contribution to
the community.

This is primarily
a junior and senior
course which at-
tracts both males
and females.

Throughout the
year, the managers
hold business
meetings, semi-
nars, workshops,
meet deadlines,
and last but
not least, conduct
"business as

usual." It's fun,
and we learn skills
that will help in our
personal lives and
our future careers.

Science

or the first time, Wilmington High School Students
had the chance to participate in the U.S. First
Competition, a national creative engineering contest
featuring school, business, and university partnerships. The
purpose of this program is to bring together the nation's
leading companies and universities in a united effort to win
over young minds to the wonders of science and technology.
The students will team up with professional engineers in
efforts to build a "champion robot", after which they will
compete in tournaments complete with referees, cheerlead-
ers and time clocks.

Drama

This is the first time in a long time that the high school has offered
a course like this. We have learned public speaking skills such as
ennunciation, poise, and posture. As a class we have put on a lip
synch performance for our friends. Currently we are doing indi-
vidual performances, and we are looking forward to putting on a
play near the end of the year for the public.

Shriners in Wilmington
Caring for Children

How This Picture Came To Be

Once upon a time a little girl with
cerebral palsy, a patient at the Shriners
Hospital in St. Louis, went to a picnic held
by Hadi Temple in Evansville, Indiana. At
the end of the day, the little girl had
trouble crossing the gravel to leave, and
Shriner Al Hortman picked her up and
carried her to the car. A nearby newspa-
per photographer happened to point his
camera in their direction after they had
passed, and he snapped a quick photo, the
last one on his roll of film.

The rest is history. Since the picnic
that day, BobbiJo Wright and Albert
Hortman have become widely recognized
as the subjects of the photo known as the
u Editorial Without Words". Depicting
Hortman as he carries Bobbi Joe and her
tiny crutches, the photo has come to serve
as a symbol of commitment of the Shrine
and its philanthropy, Shriners Hospital.

'96 DAY PARTY

— 1 — K-

165

Class History

In September of 1992, the class of '96 entered the high school amidst a lot of controversy. The little school on
Church Street was suddenly famous ... I mean notorious. Our first football game was quite interesting-since when
do fans carry broomsticks? Despite everything, the field hockey and soccer teams made it to the state tournaments.
During this time we elected Darren Bishop to be our president; Stacy Palizzolo, Vice President; Tracy Reitchel,
Secretary; and Nick Pavlidis, Treasurer. The country also elected a new president, Hillary ... I mean Bill Clinton. The
World Trade Center was bombed, the Midwest flooded, and David Koresh discovered that he really wasn't God. Due
to the great amount of school spirit that we, as a class, have, most of us, oh, that was the Seniors, well many of us. . .uh
that was the Juniors, well some of us participated in the first annual Church Street Challenge. There' s a picture to prove
that Nick did at least. Nice Dress !

Sophomore year began with Mr. DeMarco continuing as our advisor. Darren and Nick also continued in their
offices with Elise Boisvert as Secretary and Charlie Ross as Vice President. We were stunned by Reggie Lewis' death
and Michael Jordan's retirement from basketball. Some random, or not so random, acts of violence left an Olympic
team member wailing "Why me?", along with John Wayne Bobbit' s, "Where' s me?". And closer to home we attended
the Sophomore Semiformal at the Sons of Italy. Mr. Kelly retired to "Hunt Wabbit' s." The entire school was saddened
by the loss of Mr. Roger Breakey. Field hockey, boys' and girls' soccer, and girls' basketball all made it to the state
tournament. For the second consecutive year the softball team won the MVC championship and the state tournament.
And the trusty Wilmington SWAT team broke up a little, shall we say, get together, held by a certain class officer on
Salem Street.

Junior year began earlier than most, because it began in the middle of the summer, August actually. We
returned with Darren as our President; Dave Bennett as our newly elected Vice President; Elise as Secretary; and Nick
as Treasurer. We bid farewell to Mr. DeMarco and welcomed Mrs. Bertini as our new class advisor. This, however,
was cut short due to a lack of time (there were a few too many obligations at Woburn District Court). Again the sports
teams were successful in their last year in the Merrimack Valley Conference, well, with a few minor exceptions. We
watched our last sports events in the Boston Garden, Oklahoma was bombed, and a certain infamous trial began with
Mr. Shapiro at the helm, rallying support for the Juice. Our prom was held, in keeping with tradition, at the Hillview
Country Club in North Reading. We danced the night away with Eric Morin as our king and much happiness was felt
by all with the selection of a sophomore as our queen.

Senior year began on August 28, 1995 and continued until June 3, 1996 with a common theme, "We get the
shaft!" We saw many changes. Mr. Wood became our fifth, that's right, fifth advisor. We regrettably said goodbye
to Mr. Fleming. Mr. Woods became acting principal for the remainder of the year. We mourned the death of Mr. Olsson.
Huddled like cave men around a fire, the whole school gathered in the library to view the O.J. verdict, (we still think
he did it). We began our first year in the Cape Ann League. Wasn't this move supposed to help the football team? Oh
well. We quickly took over the senior lounge only to have it closed, reopened, closed and reopened and somewhere
in there monkeys from the hit film Jumanji were seen hanging from the ceiling. Our class officers remained the same
with the addition of Rachel Turesky as Co-Secretary. We voted Amanda Zaya and Steve Kosmidis, Homecoming
Queen and King. A senior-sponsored dance went over really well when someone thought his car was a ride on
lawnmower, and a few too many class officers and their friends reportedly had, well, a few too many. Our 96 Day Party
was a great success, all forty people that showed up thought so anyway. In the spring we attended the annual AP English
Play, no wait, that was taken away from us, but we all showed up for the Senior Rally, no, that was taken away from
us too. We attended the Senior Prom on May 10 at the Omni Parker House in Boston. Charisse was queen, Charlie
was king, and Tom served his drink of choice, and, well, at least he got his pictures taken. Our Senior Banquet was
held on June 4 in the cafeteria, and as for the Senior Olympics, Long Live Bumblebee Tuna! Scholarship night took
place on June 7, and graduation (THANK GOD), no the real one, took place on Sunday, June 9, 1996.

CLASS OF 1996 PROPHECY

Years from now as we, the class of 1996, assemble for our 20th reunion we will see how the members of the class have changed over
the years and what has become of all of us. Alex Inglese is now writing children's literature for Mother Goose. Tom Burke is up on
the roof throwing eggs at the field hockey team. Joan DeMarco did not make it to the reunion because she felt like staying home with
